Adequate Hand Function:
Visual Assessment
Note: The visual assessment that we are performing is a very rough assessment for a person whose vision is within normal limits.
This portion of the assessment is not designed to meet the needs of people with significant visual issues. People with significant visual problems may need to work together with a vision specialist. Rather, we are primarily looking to see if a person which font size on the communication board works best for the individual, and if can visually handle a large number of cells on the page.
VISION: GENERAL QUESTIONS
- Are you near sighted?
- Far sighted?
- Do you have any other visual issues? (Double vision, etc)
- Do you need to use glasses on to read?
- Do you need glasses on in order to see the communication board?
- If you need reading glasses on to see the board, is it feasible to have your glasses on throughout the day?
VISION: QUESTIONS TO ASK WHILE DEMONSTRATING A COMMUNICATION BOARD
- Are you able to easily see/read all the words on the communication board?
(Demonstrate another board, with larger font.) - Do you have a preference in font size, between the 1st board and the second one?
(For example, if trying out the AlphaCore Extreme, demonstrate the AlphaCore Midsize.)
Demonstrate different boards, with different font sizes. Have the person try them out. - Which board is easier for you to read?
- Is the primary communication partner easily able to see the board?
If you have difficulty seeing the words on the board, click here (Visual Issues)
If not, go on to the next section (Physical Assessment).
