Every low tech communication system has certain features.
Features might include:
- The size of the communication board
- Font size
- The number of cells on the board
- The size of the cells on the board
- The way language is structured on the board
(Is it an alphabet board, or core vocabulary? Are there phrases on the board? Locations for personalization? - How the symbols are selected:
- Direct selection- the AAC user directly selects the desired item, pointing with their finger or a laser pointer
- Indirect selection- The communication partner scans through possible choices. The AAC user indicates when the communication partner says the desired choice.
Part of the idea of the assessment is to gather information about the AAC user, and then use that information to help match the person up with the system that best meets their needs and abilities.
