About the Assessment Process (please read)
NOT PRESCRIPTIVE
The assessment questions on this website are not meant to be prescriptive. Rather, they are meant to be a tool, a rough guideline in steering you towards possible low tech options that might be useful to you.
WHO PROVIDES THE ASSESSMENT?
Ideally, the AAC user will receive an assessment from a speech language pathologist/AAC professional. However, it may be the AAC user and communication partners who help select or create the low tech system.
THIS ASSESSMENT DOES NOT ADDRESS LANGUAGE/COGNITIVE ISSUES
It is beyond the scope of this website to do provide any sort of language or cognitive assessment. We assume that the AAC user is working together with a speech language pathologist.
THE GOAL IS COMMUNICATION, NOT A PRODUCT
The goal of the assessment is not to just wind up with a “product”, but to look at a complete low tech system. The goal is to get a clearer system of a person's needs throughout the day. An individual might use one low tech system while at home, another while out on the road, and yet another at bedtime.
NOT ALL QUESTIONS ARE FOR EVERYBODY
There is a wide range of people who use AAC, who have a wide range of abilities. Many of the assessment questions will not be relevant to everyone. Pick and choose the questions that seem useful to you.
