About the Assessment Questions

NOT PRESCRIPTIVE

The assessment questions on this website are not meant to be prescriptive. Rather, they are meant to be a tool, a rough guideline in steering you towards possible low tech options that might be useful to you.

FEATURES MATCHING

NOT ALL QUESTIONS ARE FOR EVERY BODY

There is a wide range of people who use AAC, who have a wide range of abilities. Many of the assessment questions will not be relevant to everyone. Pick and choose the questions that seem useful to you.

WHO IS PROVIDING THE ASSESSMENT?

It may be the AAC User and family/friends/caregivers who is selecting the low tech system. It may be a speech language pathologist performing the assessment in a clinic setting. Many of the questions below may seem self-evident to the AAC user and their family (but may not be apparent at first glance to a professional who is new to the AAC user.

THE GOAL IS COMMUNICATION, NOT A PRODUCT

The goal of the assessment is not to just wind up with a “product”, but to look at a complete low tech system. The goal is to get a clearer system of a person’s needs throughout the day. An individual might use one low tech system while at home, another while out on the road, and yet another at bedtime.

NOTE: It is beyond the scope of this assessment to do any sort of language or cognitive assessment. We are assuming that the AAC user is working with a speech language pathologist.
